Trauma Informed Therapy

I believe the impact of traumatic experiences live in our bodies, minds, emotions, and relationships. Guided by this belief, I approach trauma-informed psychotherapy from a multi-dimensional lens, integrating my advanced training in attachment, somatic (body or felt based), and cognitive/affective trauma therapies, such as Somatic Experiencing, Trauma-Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Contemporary Psychodynamic approaches.

I specialize, and have expertise, in treating relational trauma; that is, any traumatic experience that occurred within the context of an interpersonal relationship. I have recognized subspecialties in: separation and/or divorce, abandonment, betrayal and sexual betrayal, miscarriage and infertility, and childhood emotional and sexual abuse. In fact, I've served as an expert panelist in teaching other therapists how to approach trauma resolution work with their clients! I know healing is absolutely possible and that each journey looks different.

This work is hard work. Thus, we'll first work to establish a rich and meaningful therapeutic relationship, which will allow you to go places more easily traversed with the aid of a trusted professional (and human). From there I will work collrabotively with you to form a treatment plan I believe will have a good prognosis in ushering you toward your goals. Then, we'll get to work-checking in regularly along the way to ensure you're satisfied with your progress! My hope is our work together will help you feel more safe and secure in your world and relationships, to learn to trust yourself and make value congruent decisions, to find your voice and advocate for what you need and want, and to live a life with more manageable emotions, memories, and less intrusive thoughts. True recovery is not just about symptom reduction. In order for genuine healing to occur individuals must also learn how to seek and experience genuine joy and pleasure, establish and maintain meaningful connection with others, and begin to create a satisfying life. Therefore, our treatment together will involve not only ensuring you experience less of what you do want, but that you'll also experience more of what has been missing!

Traditional Psychotherapy

Let’s face it–life is hard. Work, finances, health, politics, relationships–there are countless sources of stress, and many of us struggle to find the time to cope with the impact until it boils up and spills over to other areas of life. My integrated and dynamic traditional therapy approach draws from cognitive traditions supporting you in shifting perspective, as well as emotive and somatic traditions which support you in deeply exploring your internal world. I believe the more we know ourselves, deeply know ourselves, the more we live with conscious awareness and intention. Because a vast percentage of our thoughts and behaviors are habits, learning to live with presence can lead to powerful transformations.. Additionally, doing so allows us to identify how we are feeling sooner and avoid acting or behavior reactively. Emotion awareness and regulation is crucial work for anyone as we seldom learn how to do this until life forces us to. I have speciality training in emotion based interventions and a bulk of my traditional therapy is aimed at support people to live more peacefully with their own emotional world. In fact, I've taught the Affective and Cognitive Psychology course to doctorate students at the University of Houston! I really do love this stuff!

I have over a decade of therapeutic experience. Throughout my Master's degree and Doctorate I have trained in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and universities. In my current practice, I have also invested in years of advanced post-doctoral training in attachment, development, affective and cognitive psychology, mood disorders, and relationship functioning. A percentage of my advanced training and practice is dedicated to men's issues, and I deeply enjoy working with male-identified clients in gaining traction toward their psychological and emotional goals. Everyone deserves to live a well life and I welcome individuals from all backgrounds to my clinical practice. I have expertise in treating: perfectionism, relationship deficits (emotion regulation, communication skills, assertiveness), emotion regulation, and stress/anxiety concerns.

Divorce/Separation Recovery

Divorce is often cited as the second most stressful life event. Anyone considering a divorce (or dissolution of a significant romantic relationship), currently navigating one, or having done so in the past likely finds this to ring true. Uncoupling from a committed partnership involves psychological and emotional adjustment and healing. The grief people feel during and after a divorce is distinct in that the spouse is gone, yet still living. Thus, healing from this form of attachment wound requires specialty care and focused treatment…and, it is absolutely possible!

Most people do go on to recover from divorce. In fact, how someone navigates their divorce, the amount of support they receive, and the time they gift themselves to heal are all associated with better outcomes post-divorce. I know divorce intimately, both as a human, and as a psychologist. I have dedicated a bulk of my professional career to supporting individuals through this profound life event via high-quality professional psychotherapy targeting the unique grief of divorce. Thus, I am humbly aware of the crucial role good therapy can play in shaping the years to come.

Married or partnered and wondering if you should stay or go? I also work extensively with individuals in high-conflict or unsatisfying relationships seeking greater resolve toward a decision to stay in or leave the relationship. While therapy here will look differently depending on the individual and the relationship, we will typically start by supporting you to begin exploring and putting into words your emotional experience within the relationship. Doing so will allow our therapy work to begin the crucial process of exploring your relationship values and how well they're being met, exploring your wants and dreams for the future, and beginning to restore and rebuild a loving relationship with yourself in order to pull from a strong sense of well-being in making whichever choice you deem best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
  • What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
  • How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs. Although each person’s therapy journey starts different, here is some information that may help you know what to expect: During our first meeting we will focus on what concerns brought you to therapy in the first place. Typically, across the next two or three sessions I will take a thorough history and continuing assessing in order to have a fairly clearly picture of what I would recommend for you treatment. From there, we will discuss different options for moving forward and collaboratively design a vision for our time together informed by your goals for change and my clinical judgment. I encourage all clients to be informed consumers of their care and to ask questions regularly. It is also common to start treatment with one set of goals and discover as we move along that it is in fact a deeper set of concerns that you are really wanting to address–so, I practice flexibility with clients and frequently check-in about how you feel we are doing in addressing your concerns and making changes as needed.
  • How long will it take?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
  • I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
  • What are your rates.
$225 per 52-min session. I appreciate the financial investment in choosing to go outside of network for your therapeutic experience. Being an out-of-network provider allows me the flexibility to practice to my expertise and gifts you the privacy of your work being unencumbered by managae care stipulations. Some clients are ready and hoping to do more intensive work, therefore if we agree together, I also offer 90-minute sessions for select concerns at $350.
  • Do you take insurance?
I am not in-network with any insurance provider. However, depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part. I encourage prospective clients to keep in mind that therapy is a long-term investment. I can provide you with a superbill, which you can submit to your insurance provider for possible out-of-network benefits. You are responsible for verifying your out-of-network benefits, and for requesting any required documentation. Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services. I’d recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits: Does my health insurance plan include out-of-network benefits for mental health services? Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet? Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit? Do I need written approval from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
  • Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges Under the No Surprises Act (Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act):
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services: You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services, This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.Make sure your health care provider gives you a GFE in writing at least one business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a GFE before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your GFE, you can dispute the billnMake sure to save a copy of your GFR. • What payment methods do you accept?
I accept all major credit cards as forms of payment. Upon beginning services, you will be sent access to my secure and HIPAA-compliant on-line client portal. Once you have accessed the portal, you can enter your payment information, and the system will auto-charge your session upon termination of the appointment.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 48-hours beforehand. Otherwise, you may be charged for the full rate of the session.
